The journey begins in Ha Giang, where the stone plateaus of Dong Van unfold like ancient tales etched into the earth, and golden buckwheat blossoms wave gently in the breeze. Further north, travelers stand beneath the Lung Cu Flagpole, gazing out across the borderlands, while the emerald waters of the Nho Que River whisper stories of serenity.

The path winds east into Cao Bang, home to one of Southeast Asia’s most majestic sights—Ban Gioc Waterfall. Thunderous and enveloped in mist, its beauty is rivaled only by the hidden depths of Nguom Ngao Cave and the timeworn history of Pac Bo. 4/ What do you need to prepare when traveling to the mountains?
-Clothes: Mountainous terrain will have a colder climate than the plains and midlands, so bringing long clothes is very important because even in summer the evenings are very cold. Please check the weather to prepare appropriate clothing. A small tip is to pack your clothes in sets. For a 3-day trip, you should bring 4-5 sets for the day, 2 sets for sleeping, and 2-3 warm jackets depending on the weather.
-Shoes: Traveling in the mountains you will have to move a lot, so it is most convenient to bring sports shoes. You should bring 2 pairs of shoes, a waterproof pair for when it rains and a cool pair for when it’s hot.
-Some other necessary items:
+ Money and identification: You should bring some cash and an ATM card for protection. If you stay at a hotel, remember to prepare your identification documents to check in at the hotel.
+ Phone and camera: 2 indispensable items in every trip. If you don’t have a camera, try to bring a phone with good and beautiful photography functions, and prepare a backup charger if you have one.
+ Snacks: You should bring some snacks along the way, which can also be given as gifts to children in the highlands.
+ Medicine: You should bring a small medical box containing bandages, red medicine, fever medicine, stomach ache medicine…
+ If you go in a group, you should prepare a uniform shirt or hat to take commemorative photos. You can prepare school supplies, books, pens, rulers, warm clothes… for ethnic children as gifts. In addition, you should prepare a few clean plastic bags to store wet clothes/shoes.
5/ Should children in highland areas be given money or candy when traveling?
Usually, tourists bring candy, warm clothes, and sometimes some money for the children they meet on the street. This comes from our hearts. But sometimes unintentionally it causes consequences that we did not foresee. Children will not like to go to school, they will only like to go out on the street to ask for candy and money from tourists. This not only affects the children themselves, but also destroys the inherently clear tourism image of mountainous ethnic groups. Please don’t turn them into beggars.
So if you want to give your children something, it’s best to give them school supplies and books. The best are the books you’ve read. When stopping for a break, you meet the children, discuss with them the content of the book, arouse excitement and remember to tell them to pass it around to read.
6/ What season is best to go to Ha Giang?
Answer: Ha Giang is beautiful all year round, you can travel to Ha Giang or travel to Ha Giang at any time of the year. However, to fully explore the beauty of this rocky plateau, you should come to Ha Giang at the following times.
January-February-March: Peach blossom, plum blossom, and yellow mustard flower season. In particular, the end of March is the season of red rice flowers, blooming brightly along both sides of the Nho Que River. January-February is also the month of ethnic minority festivals.
April-May-June: Water season. Many people do not understand what flood season is. In fact, this is the time when people pour water into terraced fields from above to start plowing, preparing for the rice planting season in May-June. Watching the terraced fields sparkling with water under the sun will be a beautiful sight rarely found anywhere else.
September-October: Yellow rice season. This is the time when the weather has entered autumn, the image of terraced fields and valleys at the foot of the pass being covered with a picturesque golden cloak in this prime land of the country makes many people feel moved.
October-November-December: Buckwheat Flower Season. Every year around the end of October, until December, backpackers, without telling anyone else, just flock to Ha Giang to see buckwheat flowers. The purple buckwheat flowers spreading across the hillsides are a favorite photo spot for most visitors when they first come here.
7/ What is the most beautiful season to travel to Ban Gioc Waterfall and Ba Be Lake?
Ban Gioc Waterfall
Ban Gioc Waterfall – Cao Bang is divided into two distinct seasons, which are the rainy season and the dry season.
*Rainy season: From June to September: During the rainy season, more water flows from the source, so the waterfall is majestic and magically beautiful.
*Dry Season: During the dry season, the waterfall is quite peaceful, the golden fields at the foot of the waterfall create a romantic and peaceful scene.
Therefore, if you want to visit Ban Gioc waterfall, you can go all seasons of the year. Each season has its own, unmistakable beauty.
Ba Be Lake
Summer: In the summer, when the sweltering sun of the capital makes people feel stuffy and want to find a place with fresh, airy air, Ba Be Lake is the ideal destination.
Early autumn and spring: At this time the sky is clearer, the weather is dry, the whole sky is silhouetted under the mirror-like surface of the lake, creating an extremely interesting scene. In spring, the surrounding trees sprout and all kinds of flowers bloom.
