Before flying, the pilot checked the safety equipment and parachute and instructed the tourists. The launch site was an open space on top of Son Tra. The pilot and the participating tourists ran towards the slope in front of them to inflate the parachute and take off. However, as they approached the slope, she heard a “thud,” and all three fell down the slope, rolling many times for about 70 meters. Hoàng Anh was still conscious enough to hold her child’s face tightly, avoiding hitting dangerous obstacles, as there were many trees below.
“Fortunately, I was still conscious enough to cling to the branches to slow down the force,” Hoàng Anh said. After the accident, she and her child were taken to the hospital with many cuts and bruises on their limbs; Hoàng Anh nearly lost her thumb.
Paragliding expert Đặng Văn Mỹ, with 10 years of experience and more than 2,000 flight hours, said that Hoàng Anh’s case was due to poor coordination between the pilot and the flyer during the run-up; flying with three people in bad wind conditions also increased the risk. Below the slope in the video, many trees and obstacles could cause injury upon impact. However, because it was not a steep slope, Mỹ assessed that the possibility of a life-threatening injury was unlikely.

The pilot also experienced difficulties following the initial incident, eventually falling onto the beach. While the pilot was rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment, Quốc Tuấn tragically succumbed to his injuries sustained in the fall. This fatality cast a dark shadow over the paragliding scene in Da Nang, raising serious questions about safety protocols and the overall risk management of the Tropical Forest Company. The incident prompted immediate action from local authorities, including a temporary suspension of all paragliding activities on Son Tra peninsula.

Following recent incidents, authorities in Son Tra have temporarily suspended paragliding activities. This suspension allows for a comprehensive safety review, encompassing thorough equipment checks, evaluation of pilot qualifications and certifications, and scrutiny of licensing procedures. Currently, a limited number of operators are licensed to provide paragliding services, with costs ranging from 1.35 to 1.8 million VND per flight. This pause underscores the need for tourists to make informed decisions, prioritizing safety and verifying the credentials of service providers before engaging in paragliding experiences.

Theo chuyên gia Văn Mỹ, việc tham gia bộ môn thể thao mạo hiểm như nhảy dù luôn có rủi ro nhất định, nhẹ có thể gây xước xát người, nặng hơn có thể là gãy tay, chân hay xấu nhất là tử vong. Phi công chịu trách nhiệm khi sự cố xảy ra với khách. Tuy nhiên, du khách cũng phải có trách nhiệm với bản thân khi tham gia chơi dù lượn. Chuyên gia này từng thấy những trường hợp khách mặc váy, đi dép khi đăng ký chơi dù lượn, tiềm ẩn nhiều nguy cơ gây tai nạn trong bước chạy đà, cười cợt khi phi công đang hướng dẫn.
“Nếu không nghiêm túc, bạn không nên tham gia dù bỏ tiền để trải nghiệm”, anh nói.
Chuyên gia này nhấn mạnh người chơi nên tìm hiểu kỹ thông tin, đánh giá an toàn về đơn vị cung cấp dịch vụ trước khi tham gia. Du khách có thể yêu cầu đơn vị cung cấp thông tin liên quan đến phi công bay kèm như chứng chỉ, giờ bay.
Từ 9/10, giới chức đã tạm dừng hoạt động bay dù lượn tại bán đảo Sơn Trà để rà soát toàn bộ quy trình an toàn bay, bao gồm kiểm tra thiết bị bay và bảo hộ, đánh giá năng lực, chứng chỉ của phi công, quy trình cấp phép, địa hình.
Dịch vụ dù lượn không động cơ tại bán đảo Sơn Trà được Đà Nẵng thí điểm từ tháng 6/2023. Hiện có 5 doanh nghiệp đủ điều kiện được cấp phép khai thác, trong đó có Công ty TNHH MTV TM & DV Tropical Forest. Giá dịch vụ từ 1,35 đến 1,8 triệu đồng mỗi suất bay. Trước chuyến bay, du khách thực hiện quy trình khai báo, mua bảo hiểm và ký cam kết miễn trừ trách nhiệm.
